Ultraviolet rays cause both short and long-term damage, which include macular degeneration and temporary vision loss. 1. Polarised lenses

If you intend to spend your summer outdoors, on a road trip, or on a boat, you should buy polarised sunglasses. These glasses remove the glare that occurs when sunlight reflects on flat surfaces. These include snow, paved roads, and even water. You can see objects better and have a clear vision of the road and the sea.

2. The colour

Contrary to what most people believe, darker sunglasses do not equal more protection. Instead, the colour depth of the shades you purchase will depend on the kind of activities you want to do. For instance, if you will be doing a lot of driving, avoid rose or yellow tinted glasses. These colours make it hard for you to see the switch in traffic lights. Grey, brown, or green shades are the most preferred colours for most activities.

3. UV protection

Not all sunglasses protect you from UV rays. Always check if the glasses have 100% UV rays protection. Check with a licensed optometrist to make sure that your glasses have the right protection you need.

Ask your optometrist about Visible Light Transmittance (VLT). VLT is the amount of light that can go through an eyewear’s filter. The higher the VLT, the better is the protection against glare. For well-lighted environments, you could buy glasses with a 20 percent VLT.
